Grid Of Thumbs that link to external page

Simple question.
Is it possible to have a screen full of thumbnails (arranged say in a grid), and when you click on any of those thumbs it takes you to an external page?
1) is it possible in basic WP? if so how?
2) If not, then what plug in do I need, and how would I set it up to do that.
I've asked this around the net and no one has an answer to what seems a very simple issue.

To display the thumbnails, you need a plugin for that, try to look for flickr plugin if you want to display your fickr photo collection.

Will that allow me to have the thumbnails link to an external URL? (not link to flickr images, but other pages)
