Hi dlats,

Please read the post about how to Change .HTACESS file settings and also update on the permalinks error solution here.

Thank you, this should be the go to thread for understanding chmod.

Now that it's established that 766 is the safest and most workable setting, should the plugins and themes folder be set to 766 as well? My ebook must be the outdated version, it says 777 on page 39.

Thank you!

ps - steve, I'm a noob, php is like greek to me.

Hi Sherry,

No worry, that was the initial setting we apply but later on we find it is better to kept at 766 to avoid any hacker attack.

I think Gobala is in the preparation to update his ebook soon. So, just wait for the annoucement.

Something weird happened when I changed the plugin and themes folder to 766, I posted this in the WP forums as well,

Moderator samboll posted this on another closed thread,

"If you're going to make a quick change, you could do 777 - but that is not secure at all, so change it back. In fact, whatever you use, when finished you should CHMOD all files to 644.

http://wordpress.org/support/topic/67919?replies=6"

I had the plugins and themes folder set to 777, but when I set it to 644, the template thumbnails stopped showing in Presentation > Themes and on the main blog page, only text and blog post pictures were veisble. The header picture, sidebar template graphics all went missing and the sidebar ended up at the bottom of the page.

Then I used ftp to set the chmod back to 777, and it all appeared as before, but the main template was reset to Wordpress Default 1.5.

The question is if 777 is unsafe, how come other settings create graphical errors? I tried 766 as well but the bugs were the same as 644.

Since that post was 8 months ago is this a version problem? If so, which CHMOD setting is best for the two folders?

And there's a reply from samboll,

Quote:
Hi,

Folders
should be set to 755
Files should be set to 644.
Sorry for any confusion.

The /themes/uploads folder should be set to 777 the 1st time - then back to 755. However, many folks report it only works at 777...so I suppose you must leave it at 777 if that's all that works for you. Arrrgh!

I haven't tried 755 yet, does this mean setting the plugin/themes folder to 755 and then setting all the files inside manually to 644? Basically, 766 seems to cause the buggy stuff mentioned above.

What do you think?

Default Still can't find.

I've gone through this several times, but am still unaible to find .htaccess. It isn't in any of my folders. I believe this is what is causing a problem with trying to upload new plugins.

Hello,

The .htacess file is located on your blog root directory/folder.

For example: Your blog is at http : // www. yourdomain. com
.htacess is on your http : // www. yourdomain. com/.htacess

For example: Your blog is at http : // www. yourdomain. com / blog
.htacess is on your http : // www. yourdomain. com/ blog/ .htacess

Default Htaccess Confusion Here, Too

Hello,

I have my blog installed in its own directory. My root directory has an htaccess file, and when I open the files for the blog directory, my file manager asks if I want to create an htaccess file.

In order to install the plug-in installer (my plug-in files are in the blog directory), should I change the permissions in the htaccess file in the main directory? Or should I create a htaccess file in the blog directory and set the permissions there?

Thanks!
Lady NoCode

Hello,

CHMOD to .HTACESS is not really a big issue here, you can try yourselves and see what is happening. You will know why.

Hi, due to work, I've been leaving this idea in the back burner, but I feel like it's time to resume work on making wp site once more.

When I last logged in, there was a private section for those who bought EasyWordpress, do I need special passwords to access the area?

Have Gobala released new versions of EasyWordpress?

Thanks.

Hi Sherry,

You need to submit your purchase resit details to support center together with your forum ID in order to give you the access to the member only forum.

I was told he is going to release this month but don't take my word, just wait for his annoucement.
