How can I let the parent Category only appears on my side bar?

How can I let the parent catgories ONLY appear in the side bar , and the child categories dont appear is there a way?

no i dont use any widget for the categories except the one in the presentation ,
what i need to know now is if i can let the parent category only appears ,
also if i used the dropdown box can i change the word (select category) to be (select a hotel) where can i change the word (category)

I'm not sure if there's an easier way (although I'm sure there is) but in the meantime you can try to add in the categories to exclude manually by replacing your wp_list_categories() to:


wp_list_categories('orderby=name&exclude=6,7,8');

where 6,7,8 are the category numbers u would like to exclude (to check the numbers, see your Manage > Categories)

I'll get back to u once I figured out how to make the process easier.
