I am quite new to all of this myself. However, I am getting traffic through listing my blog in directories.
A company called Inetzeal.com offer a directory listing service quite cheaply. However, if you want to do this manually to save money go to http://www.inetzeal.com/reporting/samplereport.htm.

When you go to this page they list 450 directories which will be enough to be starting with. It can take up to a couple of months for some of the free listings to happen. However, they add to your site's authority on Technorati and seem to improve the Alexa Ranking too.

Another avenue is companies like Trafficswarm. There, if you surf the site put in front of you then you earn credits for others to visit your site in the same way. As it is harder to cheat in earning credits with this site than on some similar traffic exchanges you know that people will look at your site for a minimum of 20 seconds and if the page you direct them too grabs their attention they will probably browse further.

Other than that doing article writing and keyword targeted blog pots seem to be the bread and butter of getting traffic.
