Can't Edit wordpress theme after installing wordpress

Hi,

I had problem editing the wordpress theme inside the admin area. When i go to the theme editor, there is no update button but had one sentence below that say if this file were writable you could edit it. I had already changed my .htacess to 666 and my plugin and theme folder to 777. Can anyone help.

John,

Change the following settings to 766:
1) .hacess file
2) theme folder
3) all inside the theme folder

You dont need to ahve 777 in your theme folder. Try again, make sure you change the current theme settings only.

Hi I had change to 766 but still can't work. Does you mean change the theme folder. Then if i use the default theme, i change the default theme
folder to 766 and all the file inside default theme to 766 also.

After I change, I got this error

Warning: is_dir() [function.is-dir]: Stat failed for /home/johntanb/public_html/wp-content/themes/default (errno=13 - Permission denied) in /home/johntanb/public_html/wp-includes/functions.php on line 1783

How did you change your settings? Did you follow the guide here?
