Reflective Goal Setting!
Now is the time to prepare yourself and your business for next year and start setting your goals. Since we are nearing the end of the year, it would be a good time to reflect on what we have achieved so far and where we want to go.
A good way to do this is to set yourself some targets. Targets are great to help keeping us focused when the going gets tough so we can continue to move ahead.
Probably the easiest way to set targets is to first look at where we want to grow. For example, you might want to grow your subscriber list, or your RSS readers. Or maybe you are after more daily traffic or even income.
Regardless of your goals, to have a realistic chance to fulfill them or at least grow toward them, you need to break them down. So let’s take a look at how we can possibly do this to help set some plan for the new year.
First scenario: Let’s say you want to increase your opt-in list by 5,000 in the year 2008. To make this goal a little less threatening, it is best to break them down to a more bite size chunk. If you break this number down into monthly targets, you will need a little more than 416 opt-in subscribers per month and around 13/day.
This doesn’t sound too bad after all and that is exactly why we need to break goals and targets down.
Once we have done this, we can go about setting up an action plan. This plan should reflect ways to help us achieve this particular target. This can include promotion, advertising, product creation (free report), setting up auto responders and more depending on your actual goal.
Second scenario: You might want to have 1,200 actual visitors to your blog by the end of next year. Again, if you break this down into month it means an increase of around 120 visitors (not hits by the way but actual visitors) per month.
This doesn’t take into account your existing traffic (for those who have) and therefore the figure is very realistically possible. Blogging numbers are compounding which means they grow in a much more powerful way than simply adding the same numbers every month.
Those numbers are obviously adjustable as well as your goals. What matters here is for you to understand that if you are setting your goals now for 2008 you will be miles ahead of the pack and hit the ground running come January.
By spending a little time reflecting, planning and then implementing your goals, you can create a fantastic 2008 for yourself.
I’m currently right in the midst of setting up my own action plan for the coming year. It does take a little time, but is well worth it. What I found is that balance is the key here, so stay realistic as much as you can in regards to your everyday commitments.
If you would like to share some of your goals, I would love to hear from you in the comments section. Tips, tools, positive, negative, whatever you have experienced with goal setting in the past are all welcome.
I wish you success and prosperity.
