  • Sell Text Links Yourself with WPTextAds Plugin

    August 18, 2007 | By Gobala Krishnan |

A lot of people want to sell text links off their blog, but the idea of having to go through the hassle of managing the advertisers puts most people off, and thus services like Text Link Ads do very well.

There’s just one thing: Text Link Ads takes a hefty 50% of anything you make, and the amount is more for Post Level Text Link Ads.

If you have the right software or capability to sell text links by yourself and take 100% instead of giving away half to a middle man, would you do it? That’s the question.

WPTextAds is a Wordpress plugin that seeks to answer that question. According to their site:

WP Text Ads is a WordPress plugin that lets you sell text link ads directly to advertisers. This means you pay no commissions and get paid instantly. At the same time, advertisers save money from lower ad rates.

However, all outgoing text links contain the rel=”nofollow” attribute. If I’m an advertiser, there’s only 2 reasons why I’d want to buy text links on someone else’s blog:

    1. To get more referral traffic when someone clicks on the links
    2. To increase my backlinks and SEO power

Unless I’m pretty sure that the placement of the links can bring in some referral traffic, there’s absolutely no way I’m going to advertise on a blog with a “no-follow” on my links. It doesn’t make any financial sense, and I think having no-follow on paid links is the equivalent of daylight robbery for advertisers.

And most blogs list text links on the sidebar or in the footer, placements where you simply cannot get a lot of traffic no matter how big or popular the blog is. As far as ROI is concerned, you’ll do better with PPC ads.

There are 2 versions of WPTextAds you can use:

    1. The first is free but limits you to selling 2 page ads and 2 site-wide ads.
    2. The standard version removes this limit at a cost of $127.

To install WP text ads, you need WordPress version 2.0 or higher.

My recommendation is unless you’re already inundated with advertisers for your blog, it’s better to stick with Text Link Ads or other similar more established services. They tend to have larger marketplaces that can help you sell your links without much effort on your part.

The middle-man sometimes is a necessary option!
